EDGECAM - Turning Fundamentals
Rating :

EC-SMT-CL

Description

This course is the recommended starting point for any new EDGECAM user with turning applications. The focus is solids-based machining for 2-axis turning applications. These concepts are fundamental for all turning licenses. While the focus is on single spindle and single turret CNC machines, the concepts are applicable to multi-spindle and multi-turret CNC machine configurations. The training is taught by a Hexagon Applications Engineer with practical experience in turning. This instructor-led training uses practical examples and provides reasonable time for students to learn topics by completing course exercises. Each student is provided an EDGECAM workstation with all files used in class.

Applicable Licenses

This course covers capability on the Essential Turning and Standard Turning systems. Training is focused on 2 axis turning applications, with the focus on single spindle and single turret CNC machines. Live tool drilling (CY axis) for axial hole applications is also introduced.  Continuing fundamental training for CY applications is provided in the CY Fundamentals training class.

Students will be introduced to
- The EDGECAM Launcher, which includes the user interface and typical solids-based software workflow.
- Building the Virtual CAM Setup (opening the solid, orienting the model for the machining setup, adding stock and work holding, and selecting the CNC machine).
- Feature recognition using automatic feature finder technology.
- Toolpath creation for common turning applications. This begins with understanding how to create toolpath for facing, external and internal turning, grooving, and threading. Live Tool Drilling for axial holes will be introduced.
Other machining cycles (toolpath types) may also be covered, at the instructor’s discretion.
- As students gain confidence in creating toolpath, toolpath accelerators will be introduced. These factory-installed machining strategies help users quickly build toolpath for common features. (This is commonly described using terms such as Knowledge Based Machining and Feature Based Machining.) Note this course introduces how to use factory-installed machining strategies to speed up the toolpath creation process. Further assistance and instruction for customers that want to further leverage EDGECAM’s automation potential is available and is beyond the scope of this course.
- Additional time-savings tips will be introduced throughout the training course.
- Toolpath simulation. This includes tool path visualization, simulation showing 3D material removal, and simulation showing CNC machine movement.
- Tool Database essentials, covering the basics of creating common tools such as square shank turning tools, boring bars, and drills.
- Generate NC code.

Pre-Requisites
- EDGECAM Prismatic Milling Fundamentals course
- Familiar with CNC machining and/or programming.
- Basic computer skills.
- If you have registered for a course run in a Hexagon training lab, each student is provided an EDGECAM workstation with all files used in class. Unless otherwise specified, workstations in Hexagon training facilities run Windows 10 operating system.
- If you have registered for web-based training, students will use their company’s workstation which must have EDGECAM 2022.1 version installed and licensed prior to attending training. The Sample Tool Store database that is installed with EDGECAM will be used for the course. Student workstations should also have
     - Reliable High Speed Internet Connection
     - Microphone and Speakers, or a phone for audio
     - Dual Monitors are strongly recommended.
