When subscription licenses started to be a thing, I was the worst opponent of this idea. Rental licenses. As an old engineer, it didn't make sense to me why this would be good.
Now, after all these years, I'm a supporter of this idea that it represents.
Why?
Customer gets in touch and has problems in the software. Old version, no maintenance for 9 years. So, no support. Their questions maybe could only be answered in new versions, as only these contain the new standards and guidelines. And most people don't even realize that they have no maintenance or outdated software...
With a subscription license that is never the issue because you have:
Contact with Q-DAS at least once a year.
You are informed - if all other information channels are not sufficient - that there are new versions.
You have the option to adjust the licenses. Today 10 qs-STAT, next year 3 qs-STAT and 5 qs-STAT Web, the following year 1 qs-STAT, 3 qs-STAT WEB and the reporting system or rest API.
The world is changing, and so are software options and customer requirements. Subscription licenses offer the opportunity to react to such changes.
And the argument that subscription is just a way of earning more money:
Subscription means once a year the effort at the customer to import the license.
Subscription increases the pressure on the software manufacturer to adhere to release cycles so that the customer can plan.
Subscription increases the pressure on the software manufacturer to inform customers about new features.
Subscription increases the pressure on the software manufacturer to respond promptly to customer requests.
